A drum (20) is driven in two opposite directions. A covering (21) formed from articulated sections which rest on the water is connected so that it can be wound on or unwound off the drum. The drum is housed in a movable casing (7) which can be displaced from one end of the swimming pool as far as an intermediate point and returned to its initial position. The drum casing is open in its lower part and supported by guided rollers in guide tracks extending along the swimming pool. The casing is supported by four pinions two of which are located at either end.
