The present invention relates to a method of controlling a plasma arc cutter for forming a plasma arc between an electrode of a plasma torch and a workpiece so as to effect cutting. The invention is characterized by comprising: detecting a voltage between said electrode and said workpiece or between a nozzle and said workpiece; causing said voltage to rise as the distance between said plasma torch and said workpiece becomes larger; and stopping a power source when said voltage exceeds a predetermined value so as to prevent the occurrence of a double arc in advance. <IMAGE>
