Regular arrays of microscopic particles are provided on substrate surfaces by (a) providing a monolayer of close-packed spheres (S) on a substrate surface (e.g. by spin-coating with a suspension of polystyrene spheres); and (b) using the spheres as a mask for depositing a material on the substrate surface through the gaps (G) between the spheres (e.g. by physical vapour deposition). Possible further steps include: removal of the spheres (S); heating to melt the particles to covert them to hemispheres; and application of more material which may be the same or different. |
