Prodn. of 1,1,3-trialkoxypropane comprises reacting acrolein with a 1-6C alcohol in mol. ratio of 1 to more than 3 at 10-100 degrees C in the presence of an acid catalyst, partially neutralising the reaction mixt. and distilling the partially neutralised mixt.. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a solid acid catalyst insol. in the reaction mixt.. The pH of the reaction mixt. liberated from the catalyst by adding an amine or contacting with a basic ion exchanger is raised to 4.5-7, measured in a sample diluted ten times with water. The partially neutralised reaction mixt. is sepd. by distn. into one or more low boiling fractions free from alkoxypropionaldehydes, and 3-alkoxypropionaldehydes and dehydrated high boiling fraction contg. 1,1,3-trialkoxypropane, or into a low boiling fraction, a middle boiling fraction contg. 3-alkoxypropionaldehyde and water, and a high boiling fraction contg. 1,1,3-trialkoxypropane, distilling off the 1,1,3-trialkoxypropane from each high boiling fraction, and removing the 3-alkoxypropionaldehyde by pervaporation. |
