FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: new protected bicyclic amidines of formula I wherein A is selected from -CR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>-CR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP>-CR<SP>5</SP>R<SP>6</SP>-; -CR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>-CR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP>-CR<SP>5</SP>R<SP>6</SP>-CR<SP>7</SP>R or -CR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>-CR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP>-CR<SP>5</SP>R<SP>6</SP>-CR<SP>7</SP>R<SP>8</SP>-CR<SP>9</SP>R wherein A substituents are enumerated beginning from nitrogen atom, and B is selected from <EMI ID=0.16 HE=12 WI=63 TI=CHI>, and R and R independently from each other are hydrogen, C<SB>1</SB>-C<SB>4</SB> alkyl, R<SP>15</SP>-R independently from each other are hydrogen, C<SB>1</SB>-C<SB>4</SB> alkyl, or at least one of R<SP>15</SP>-R is amino- , C<SB>1</SB>-C<SB>4</SB>-alkylamino-, or C<SB>1</SB>-C<SB>4</SB> alkyl substituted by amino group or C<SB>1</SB>-C<SB>4</SB> alkylamino group, and method of preparation thereof. Amidines are useful as catalysts to prepare polyurethanes and they are strongly bonded with polyurethane. One stage method comprises reacting lactone of general formula II wherein A is as defined above, with at least equimolar amount of general formula: H<SB>2</SB>N-B-NH<SB>2</SB> (III) wherein B is as defined above on heating to at least 150 C in the presence of acid catalyst, and reaction mixture thus formed is subjected to fractional distillation without isolation of intermediate product.
