Before storage in the decay-cooling pond (10), fuel rods removed from the reactor pressure vessel (12) are secured together, into tightly-packed bundles. Each bundle is placed inside its own individual insert (22), which fits the cross section of compartments in the fuel element storage rack (2). The inserts (22, 24), filled with fuel rods, are introduced into the radiation-shielding transport container (32). An Independent claim is included for a suitable transport container protecting against radiation (known as flasks) from irradiated fuel rods.
