A temperature modulated catalytic chemical conversion reactor has its operating temperature, pressure, residence time, irradiation level, or chemical composition, etc varied at intervals of time and a derivative parameter is evaluated from a signal, provided from a detector connected to the reactor, for the intervals. The volumes of the reactor and the detector should be identical and preferably the units should occupy a common volume; it is crucial that the reactor, itself, presents minimal response lag. The signal derivative may be evaluated by integration of a detector signal after phase demodulation. An INDEPENDENT is also included for an apparatus for performing the analytical procedure, preferably using a photochemical reactor and a flame ionization detector (FID).
