PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a cyanide without using a cyanide-contg. material by carrying out electrolysis in a cyanate-contg. carbo nitriding melt. SOLUTION: The electrolysis is appropriately carried out at 4-100 A/dm2 current density and in the temp. range of 450-650 deg.C for 1-12 hr. A corrosion resistant material, advantageously a titanium material, a nickel material, high Cr steel, tantalum or graphite is preferably used as an electrode material. A carbonitriding melt 2 having 36-38% cyanate content is poured into a crucible 1, two metallic plates 3, 3' which function as electrodes are suspended in the crucible 1 and connected to rectifying tubes through copper ducts and electric current 5 is supplied. By the electrolysis, 1-5 wt.%, advantageously 2-4 wt.% cyanide content is obtd.
