The turning machine has a spindle box movable horizontally to above a loading device (5) with a working spindle (4) in the spindle box, mounted with vertical and rotation bearings. A workpiece clamp chuck are on the box's lower end, and a workpiece carrier is beneath the hollow working spindle. The loading arrangement, which can be pivoted between vertical and horizontal positions, accepts a workpiece (6) in the horizontal position and has an insertion device axially movable in the loading arrangement. An Independent claim is also included for a method of loading a turning machine.
