PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain the miniaturization of a bigram dictionary, which is used for context post-processing in the recognizing processing of handwriting input characters, and to facilitate packaging into a portable computer. SOLUTION: At the time of miniaturizing the bigram dictionary which stores the link information of two characters found from a learning text, the value of its probability is quantized into prescribed step number (256 steps, for example), while using hybrid probability, that value is expressed for a short word length (1 byte, for example), and concerning the probability smaller than a prescribed value, such information is not registered on the bigram dictionary. Thus, the dictionary can be miniaturized without damaging a recognition rate.
