PURPOSE: Disclosed is a preparing method of fine carbon fiber using iron-group transition metal catalyst supported on basic metal oxide. The basic metal oxide used as a catalytic support is able to be removed easily on the final prepared carbon fiber and the iron-group transition metal oxide as active species is employed to be prepared in high dispersion on the support. CONSTITUTION: The basic metal oxide may use magnesia, calcia, magnesium hydroxide, or calcium hydroxide, and has a high specific surface area to make the active species to disperse well. The active species employed with iron-group metal such as iron, nickel, or cobalt, IA group metal such as lithium, sodium, or potassium, and IIIA group as aluminium is prepared in the solution, and the fine metal oxide catalyst is prepared by the dry and the reduction treatment of hydrogen. The fine carbon fiber has a surface area of 60-500 m2/g and makes the active species, iron-group metal, to react the surface species of carbon by the procedure of adsorption and decomposition at 400-600 deg.C. To reduce the side reaction to the generation of tar, the operation temperature over 600 deg.C and the time of the decomposition of hydrocarbon is controlled. The prepared catalyst has a specific surface area of basic metal oxide of 80-200 m2/g and that of reduced catalyst of 40-90 m2/g, and a spherical particle of 30-500 μm diameter. Finally, to make the fine carbon fiber in high purity, the acidic solution such as acetic acid is employed to remove the basic metal oxide and iron transition metal.
