PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus which can record data or can reproduce recorded data with respect to a data area of a sector even when an address ID of the sector cannot be detected. SOLUTION: This apparatus has magnetic heads 6 and 7, a carriage mechanism 9, a medium-driving motor 5, and a control part 11 which recognizes a target sector instructed from the outside on the basis of an address (p) of the target sector and makes the magnetic heads 6 and 7 access the target sector. When the address (p) cannot be detected from the recording medium, the control part 11 recognizes a sector one prior to the target sector on the basis of an address p-1 on the recording medium, makes the magnetic heads access a sector one after the recognized sector, and confirms whether or not an address of the sector one after the recognized sector agrees with an address p+1.
