In each compartment sensors (4) are mounted vertically. The sensors are of magnetostrictive material and have different natural frequencies in air. A separately mounted unit (5) generates an ac field which excites the sensors to oscillate to a degree determined by whether or not they are in air. The behavior of the sensors is evaluated by a further unit (7) to operate the fuel gauge (8).
