PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spin valve element which is excellent in operation stabil ity and has sufficient sensitivity even when element width becomes narrow and to provide a magnetic head using the element. SOLUTION: In the spin valve element, width of a first ferromagnetic material layer 8 being a magnetization free layer is larger than width of a second ferromagnetic material layer 4 being a magnetization fixed layer and width of an antiferromagnetic material layer 5 a permanent magnet layer 9, which is in contact with the first ferromagnetic material layer and is used for impressing magnetic bias, is not in contact with the second ferromagnetic material layer and the antiferromagnetic material layer. In another spin valve element, an electrode 10 for supplying current to the element and detecting change thereof is in direct contact with nonmagnetic electrical conductor layer 3. These spin valve elements are used for a magnetic read-out part.
