The kerbstone clamping mechanism includes a bearer (232) which is placed on the stone (B) and fitted with the other sides of the tong arms (220,230) in such a way that additional clamping force can be applied by moving the arms relative the stone and bearer (232). The other ends of the arms can pivot on a tapped (110) block (1000) mounted on a spindle (900) fixed to the mechanism crank (700). The block can move between the supporting elements (231) which form parts of the bearer (232) and face one another in the reverse clamping force direction and the second sides of the arms (220,230) are fixed to a bolt (221) moving in slotways (234) set normal to the clamping direction. The arm sides have a bore (235) taking one side of the bolt (221), the bore holes preferably spaced out to determine the arm jaw (240,250) interval.
