PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup unit which can perform its image pickup operation with optical resolution of a solid-state image pickup device, that is in matching with that of a microscope, will not waste memory capacity that is necessary for recording the image data and can perform the image pickup operation without waste of time. SOLUTION: In a normal photographing mode, image data on an object that is projected through a microscope optical system are obtained. The microscope optical system can freely switch an objective lens 4, which can be set at desired magnification (desired optical resolution) via the operation of a revolver 5. In a high-resolution image pickup mode, image data are obtained by compositing plural frame images, which are fetched by shifting a CCD camera 8 itself or shifting an object image Q that is projected on the camera 8. In such a constitution, the optical resolution of the microscope optical system is compared with that of the camera 8. According to this comparison result, an image-fetching switch means 11 performs switching between the normal and high image resolution photographing modes.
