PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner which can reduce the necessity of securing the strength of a handle and the adjoining region. SOLUTION: This vacuum cleaner has an electric blower 28 bilaterally in the middle in a cleaner body 11. The power cable for supplying the electric power to the electric blower 18 is reeled to a reel 31. The rotation of the reel 31 is stopped by the roller body 39 against the force of a spiral spring which rotates the reel 31 in the reeling direction. The rotation halting state of the reel 31 by the roller body 39 is released by pushing a movable handle 23, which is located over the center of gravity of the cleaner body 11, supports the cleaner body 11, and is usually retracted such that the handle be to fit with the upper shape of the cleaner body 11, downward further from the retracted position to activate an operation button 25 which is located below the handle 23 and bilaterally in the middle in the cleaner body 11.
