PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for inspecting coins with a low-cost constitution capable of accurately inspecting the shape of the edge of a coin and the rugged pattern of the surface of the coin with a simple one set of coil constitution. SOLUTION: First and second coils are respectively wound on two adjacent legs of a comb core having a plurality of legs substantially linearly disposed at a predetermined interval, and sensing coils for generating a double-humped magnetic field by exciting the first and second sensing coils so that magnetic fluxes generated from the poles formed of the two legs repel from one another are formed. The coil to be inspected is passed through the magnetic field generated from the sensing coils, and the truth or falsehood of the coin to be inspected is judged based on an impedance change generated at the sensing coils when the coin is passed.
