To knit a hollow body on a flatbed knitter, e.g. a pullover, the fabric is knitted on four planes (10,11,20,21) with two facing needle beds. The knitter has a stitch loop transfer mechanism. To knit a pullover and the like, on a flatbed knitter, the outer side (10) of the rear garment section is knitted with every second needle of the trailing needle bed and the outer side (20) of the front garment section is knitted with every second needle of the front needle bed. The inner side (11) of the rear garment section is knitted with the alternating free needles of the front bed if the section is knitted with knit stitches and with the alternating free needles of the rear bed if knitted with purl stitches. The inner side (21) of the front garment section is knitted with the alternating free needles of the rear bed if the section is knitted with knit stitches and with the alternating free needles of the front bed if knitted with purl stitches. An Independent claim is included for a tubular knitted garment. e.g. a pullover, with tubular knitted bands.
