PURPOSE: An on-line educational system using the Internet and a method for authenticating a user is provided to authenticate a user using an ID(identification) and authentication card such as a smart card. CONSTITUTION: In an on-line educational system using the Internet(108), card readers(104,106) extract user authentication information from an identification and authentication card for connecting to the system. User terminals(100,102) are connected to the card readers(104,106) and supply the user authentication information extracted from the identification and authentication card. An educational service server(110) executes user authentication using the user authentication information being transmitted from the user terminals(100,102), permits a system connection of an authenticated user terminal, and supplies various on-line education contents services. If the educational service server(110) requests for a user to connect to the system, an authentication server(120) authenticates the user using the user authentication information and supplies an authentication result to the educational service server(110).
