PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable telephone which can switch various functions thereof to match with a user's using state by detecting a change of an open state of the telephone and which can simplify its operation. SOLUTION: The portable telephone of an openable/closable structure by rotating a body 2 and a cover 3 via a hinge mechanism 4 with each other comprises a closed state detecting circuit 5 for detecting the closed state of the telephone, and a fully open state detecting circuit 7 for detecting the fully open state of the telephone. The telephone further comprises a CPU 8 for deciding whether the telephone is the closed state, the fully open state or a half open state between the closed state and the fully open state from the detected result. The CPU 8 controls to switch so as to assigning one of a plurality of functions designated by a user input via an operating unit 12 of the plurality of functions of the telephone in response to the decided result.
