PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the quality of the whole image scanner by performing original reading at a reading position causing little streaks even if reading image quality is degraded in a mode stressing on no density reproducibility depending on an image quality mode and a reading mode in order to reduce vertical streaks occurring on an image caused by dust in an ADF (auto document feeder) original reader and by reading an original at a reading position providing good picture quality in a mode stressing on the image quality. SOLUTION: An image scanner has an original carrier and forms the picture by at least two or more reading modes. In the image scanner, the original reader is moved as far as below the original carrier and stopped, the original moving between a carrier roller of the image carrier and a light source is read by the original reader by emitting light from the light source of the original reader toward the carrier roller of the original carrier.
