PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device with the reduced power consumption of a filament while stably lighting, not consuming unnecessary electric power when the filaments at one side or both sides are broken. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device comprises an inverter circuit outputting high-frequency electric power, a discharge lamp, a load circuit including a choke coil for current reduction serially connected to the discharge lamp, first and second capacitors connected in parallel with the discharge lamp, and a driver circuit deciding the output frequency of the inverter circuit. The load circuit or the discharge lamp is connected to the output point of the inverter circuit, and a first capacitor is connected to the load circuit through a filament at one side of the discharge lamp, and the second capacitor is connected to the load circuit through a filament at the other side of the discharge lamp. The output frequency of the inverter circuit generated immediately after the power is turned on is set higher than the resonance frequency of the choke coil and either the first or the second capacitor.
