A running machine with the least possible height from the ground to a running surface of an endless belt, which is achieved without decreasing an outside diameter of a driving roller. The running machine of the invention comprises a lower support (10) contacted by the ground and having side frames (12,12) separate d from each other, a running belt of an endless belt (20) mounted between said side frames (12,12), adapted to have a running plate (22) inserted thereinto and an uppe r surface (21) on which a user runs, the running plate (22) having a slide surface coming into a sliding - contact with a lower surface of an upper portion (20a) of the endless belt (20), a driving roller (23) for rotating the endless belt (20) mounted in an inner portion of a frontal end of the endless belt (20), a sliding member (25) for guiding the rotational movement of the endless belt (20) mounted in an inner portion of a rear end thereof, a driving unit (26) for rotating the driving roller (23); and a tension member (30) mounted near the driving roller (23), depressing the upper portion of the endless belt (20) toward a lower portion to maintain a properly tensioned state of the endless belt with a distance between the upper portion (20a) and the lower portion (20b) of the endless belt (20) being smaller than the diameter of the driving roller (23) .
