PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the controller of a vehicle in which the driving operability is improved by smoothing a change in the driving force in spite of the downshift of a stepped automatic transmission for an accelerator operation, while feeling of acceleration is improved, and the driving force increases when a manual downshift is done. SOLUTION: Target driving force F<SP>*</SP>which smooths the change in the driving force F for the change in the accelerator opening Acc by a target driving force setting means 106 in the change gear of the stepped automatic transmission (automatic transmission 16) is set for each shift position P<SB>SH</SB>of a shift operation device 94, based on an accelerator opening Acc and a gear step, and output torque T<SB>OUT</SB>after downshift of the automatic transmission 16 smooths the change in the driving force so that the output torque T<SB>OUT</SB>for the accelerator operation Acc so as to improve the driving operability. When the manual downshift is done, the target driving force F<SP>*</SP>is changed, and feeling of acceleration is obtained by the change in the driving force meeting the shift position P<SB>SH</SB>.
