Fuel is passed out from first set of ports of a ring, and oxidant is passed out from second set of ports of the ring. Combustion of fuel and oxidant passed out from first and second sets of ports of the ring is then performed to produce flame envelope (24) around gas jets (5). Gas jets are passed out from nozzles (2) housed in a lance (3) having a lance face (6) with a ring of ports around nozzles. An independent claim is also included for a coherent jet lance for gas lancing.
