The cross member has two cables (14) situated outside a tube (4). Each cable is provided with a tension adjuster (18) in order to modify tension of the cable. The cables bring closer cleats (6) integrated to ends of the tube so that the tube is maintained in compression along a longitudinal line. The cleats are fixed on struts of a motor vehicle. Retractors (20) maintain the cables spaced from the tube. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle including a crossmember.
