PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a cylindrical battery capable of manufacturing a cylindrical battery by executing a grooving process even to a battery case different in battery size by a common grooving machine. SOLUTION: In this manufacturing method of a cylindrical battery, an electrode plate group is stored in a bottomed cylindrical battery case, the outer periphery of the opening part of the battery case is grooved, a sealing plate is disposed at the opening part of the battery case through a gasket, and the opening end of the battery case is caulked for sealing. In the grooving step of rotating and driving the battery case 5 in such a state that a core 12 matching the diameter of the opening part of the battery case 5 is fitted to the opening part and supported from the inner peripheral side thereof and abutting a rotatable grooving roller 15 on the outer periphery of the opening part of the battery case 5 and gradually pressing the grooving roller, the rotating speed of the roller is increased as the diameter of the battery case 5 is increased to process it so that the pressed amount of the grooving roller 15 per unit rotating peripheral length and unit time can be set to approximately a prescribed value even if the battery size and diameter of battery case 5 are different.
