摘要 1404654 Galvanic cell cathode E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 31 Aug 1972 [3 Sept 1971] 40328/72 Heading H1B A hinged segment galvanic cell cathode comprises a number of adjacent segments of normally inflexible cathode active material with a flexible, conductive sheet 2, Fig. 1, extending continuously therethrough, wherein adjacent segments 1 can be relatively displaced into the form of a spiral roll to bring the segments closer to each other without loss of cathode active material such that in the rolled form the segments are defined by axially parallel grooves in the cathode active material. Such a cathode may be formed, Fig. 5 (not shown), by passing a conductive grid or mesh together with particulate cathode active material between an opposed pair of ridged compressive rollers thereby simultaneously compacting the cathode active material about the grid and forming the grooves therein. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4, adjacent segments are arcuate and of successively increasing radius so that they may be hinged at 3, 4, 5 and 6 and swung into a spiral. The conductive sheet 2 of the cathode may comprise a Ni, Cu, Ag, Pt or stainless steel foil or gauze, or Ag-coated glass cloth, glass fibre floe mat or nylon fabric or glass strands and Ag or stainless steel fabric. The cathode active material may comprise copper sulphide, iron sulphide, silver chloride, silver oxide, nickel oxide, lead peroxide or the reaction product of sulphur and copper in an atomic ratio of 1 : 1 to 1À1 : 1. Specific examples are given and a flat segment type cathode may be incorporated into a cell with a lithium anode, a bibulous spin bonded polypropylene film separator and an electrolyte comprising 70 wt. per cent tetrahydrofuran and 30 wt. per cent 1,2-diemthoxyethane containing 10% dissolved lithium perchlorate. Alternatively a curved segment type cathode may be incorporated into a cell with a lithium anode, a bibulous sheet polyethylene separator and an electrolyte comprising 7À6% lithium perchlorate and 26À4% lithium hexafluorophosphate in methyl acetate.
