In the production of resinous condensation products from substituted phenols and aldehydes according to the process described in Specification 459,459, there is used in addition to, or instead of, the terpene halides used in the preparation of the substituted phenol, halides prepared from technical alicyclic hydrocarbons or corresponding mixtures of saturated or unsaturated character which are oxygen-free or contain hydroxyl groups (other than terpenes, sesquiterpenes or polyterpenes) or acyclic compounds of genetically kindred substances such as olefinic terpenes, terpinogens, or compounds of undetermined structure obtained by simple treatment, such as heating, from high molecular weight substances such as natural resins. Suitable substances to be converted into halides include hexahydrotoluene, hexahydroxylene, decahydronaphthalene (which may occur in petroleums rich in naphthenes), brown-coal tar and mineral-coal tar distillation products, geraniol, isoprene, copal oils and tall oils. The halides may be prepared by substitution with halogen, addition of halogen or hydrogen halide, or by esterification of hydroxyl groups. Excess free phenol present in the substituted phenol prepared may be removed or converted into other substituted phenols. In examples: (1) a benzine fraction is chlorinated and condensed with phenol in the presence of zinc chloride; (2) geraniol is treated with gaseous hydrogen chloride and the product condensed with phenol in the presence of zinc chloride; (5) Congo copal oil and phenol are reacted in the presence of hydrogen chloride and zinc chloride; (6) isoprene and phenol are reacted in the presence of hydrogen chloride and aluminium chloride; and in all cases the products are reacted with aqueous formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of halides of terpenes, sesquiterpenes and polyterpenes and substances resembling terpenes such as menthane, pinane, cedrene, cadine, terpinhydrate, turpentine oils, pine oils, colophony, tallow oils, borneol, menthol, terpin, and terpineol. Examples illustrate the use of American pine oil, abietic acid, dipentene and cumin oil in the manufacture of the substituted phenol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
