Alkyl aromatics isomerisation - in presence of nitrogen base reduces transalkylation

Isomerisation of alkyl aromatics (esp. C8 aromatics to p - xylene), catalysed by a Group VIII metal (Pt or Pd) together with alumina and a finely divided crystalline aluminosilicate (mordenite), is performed in the presence of a basic nitrogen cpd. (pref. amine, esp. ammonia) to transalkylation (pref. quantity of base being 0.1 - 200 ppm. elementary N per pt.wt. of alkyl aromatic).
