A first thermal insulation 40 is fixed to the exterior walls of the tank and second insulation 51 independent of and spaced from the first insulation is located on the interior walls 50, 52 of the hold. The second insulation serves as a secondary barrier which is protected from the extremes of cryogenic temperatures by the insulating effect of the first insulation.
