An apparatus for working up old tires by multi-stage comminution and sorting of the comminuted pieces on the basis of type and size comprising charging means for feeding whole old tires to a precomminuting unit and breaking down the tires into pieces of the size of approximately the palm of the hand, a conveyor means for feeding the pieces to a magnetic separator for removal of all steel-containing pieces, and a device for grinding the iron-free pieces. The latter device includes two grinding stages and is designed to separate the rubber from fiber components.
