An interior lamp for a refrigerator or deep freeze cabinet with a lift-up lid on the top, has the lamp (0) and its housing mounted immediately above the freezer compartments (11) instead of on the lid (1). The lamp is located inside a compartment with a light diffusing top cover (5) and a protection plate (8) underneath. Its current carrying cable (12) travels vertically downwards inside the casing to a switch (13) near the base of the cabinet, and this switch is operated by a vertical rod (14) at the rear, terminating at the top by a plunger (16) held in tension by a spring (17) pushed by an upper shoe (15) which is pushed down by a cam (18) attached to the rear of the lid (1) when the latter is lifted.
