1497884 Boring earth &c B F CLARK 2 June 1975 [31 May 1974] 23829/75 Heading E1F Drilling fluid carrying ground samples is brought to the surface via a diverter, the diverter serving also to sealingly receive and align a drill rod 31 of a percussive drill. The diverter includes a rigid chamber 6 which is screwed onto the top of a bore hole casing 4 by means of stub-length of casing 7 having a radial flange 10 and seal 11. A sleeve 14 fastened to the top of the chamber serves as a stuffing box, and a further sleeve 22 screwthreaded on the sleeve 14 carries bearings 29 and a hardened pressed-in bush 32 for aligning the drill rod. A reservoir 33 for lubricating oil is provided above the bearings and nipples 20, 21 are provided in the sleeve 14 for applying grease to a stuffing gland 19 in the sleeve. The gland is axially located by an abutment member 28 which is advanced to wards the gland by manually rotating the sleeve 22 with the use of handles 25, 26. An output from the chamber 6 leads to a flexable high-density hose 49. The chamber is coated with an abrasion-resistant coating. |
