<p>1440105 Joint-making packing J BROTHERS 8 Oct 1973 [6 Dec 1972] 46930/73 Heading F2B A seal joint between members 12, 14 or 14, 14 of, for example, a pressure vessel is made by providing recesses 24 in the interfacing surfaces 34, disposing resilient elements 26 in the recesses and a ductile element 32 which is sheared as the members are bolted together to form sealing sub-elements which compress the resilient elements in the recesses. As shown, the ductile element 32 may be made of lead, copper or soft steel and formed with shoulders 38 which shear off and enter recesses 40 during assembly. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) two ductile elements (44) are provided one each side of a cutting die (46) so that as the members (14a, 14a) are bolted together the middle portions of the ductile elements are sheared off and forced into the recesses to compress the resilient elements (26). The remaining portions of the ductile elements are deformed between castellations (50, 52).</p> |
