<p>1509317 Metal values from marine nodules SOC METALLURGIQUE LE NICKEL SLN 7 July 1975 [10 July 1974] 28597/75 Heading C1A A method of extracting metal values from polymetallic nodules from the sea comprises successively: (a) melting the nodules under reducing conditions to obtain, after separation of slag a concentrate containing at least Ni, Cu, Co and Fe; (b) reacting gaseous Cl 2 with the concentrate in an aqueous medium to obtain an aqueous solution containing chlorides of nickel, cobalt, copper and iron, and removing any solid matter from the aqueous solution; (c) precipitating the C 4 in the aqueous solution using a more electropositive metal powder and melting and casting the precipitate into anodes; (d) electrorefining the copper precipitate anodes; (e) purifying the aqueous solution obtained from step (c) by removing the Fe and Co therefrom by firstly treating the solution with chlorine to oxidize FeCl 2 to FeCl 3 , and then contacting the solution successively with tributyl phosphate to extract the Fe and tri-isooctylamine to extract the Co and (f) re-extracting the Fe and Co from the tributyl phosphate and tri-isooctylamine by contacting the tributyl phosphate and triisooctylamine with aqueous re-extraction phases comprising hydrochloric acid to obtain aqueous solutions comprising chlorides of cobalt and iron respectively. The aqueous solutions obtained in steps (e) and (f) may be subjected to electrolysis to obtain metallic Ni, Co or Fe respectively. The metal powder used in step (c) may be iron powder or the crushed product of the melting under reducing conditions (a) and the gaseous chlorine produced during the electrolysis operations may be recycled to step (b).</p> |
