Slide valve seal the outlet of a casting pan of molten metal and enables the flow of molten metal into a form to be controlled. The valve is fastened to the floor of the pan in such a manner that the entire assembly is hinged and can be swung away from the floor of the pan to provide access to the outlet. The valve is in the form of a plate contg. a central pouring tube. The upper surface of the plate moves across a plate in the valve frame, the surface between the two components serving as a seal to prevent the egress of molten metal. The lower end of the valve tube passes through a slot in the lower part of the valve frame which permits the movement of the slide backwards and forwards. The valve is so designed that the pan discharged outlet is readily accessible. The hydraulic cylinder can be detached by unscrewing it from the valve frame and the double hinge arrangement for attaching the valve frame to the floor of the pan enables the valve to be swung completely clear of the opening as required. The hydraulic cylinder can be removed during the filling of the pan to protect it from spillage.
