A variable-length ladder is made up of step sections 1 having coupling members 4, 5 for connecting in a releasable manner an arbitrary number of consecutive step sections 1. The step sections 1 are constituted by bent plate pieces and the coupling members 4, 5 are constituted by mutually opposing edge sections, bent over in opposite directions, of each plate piece.
