Halides are prepd. by reacting crystallised alkyl- or aryl halides with Mg in an anhydrous ether. Novelty consists in dissolving the crystalline alkyl- or aryl halide in an inert solvent; refluxing and removing volatile impurities by azeotropic sepn.; removing excess solvent by distn. and using the residual melt in alkyl - or aryl Mg halide prepn. The inert solvent can be hexane, toluene or xylene. Highly active Grignard solns. can be prepd. Retarded Grignard formation can be prevented. Side-reactions are suppressed. Drying times are reduced. "Azeotrope drying" can take place in large batches without smell-or solids emission.
