PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful for the perfume industry and as a synthetic intermediate for medicine or agricultural chemical, in high yield simply, by the reaction of an unsaturated alcohol in an oxygen atmosphere in a polar aprotic solvent, in the presence of an inexpensive and readily available catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An unsaturated alcohol expressed by formula I (R<1> is H or lower alkyl; R<2> is a hydrocarbon group, which may contain at least one hetero-atom of O, S, N, etc. therein), e.g. geraniol.nerol(3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadien-1-ol), is reacted in the presence of an aromatic mercaptan, e.g. benzenethiol, etc., as a catalyst, preferably in an amount ranging 0.5-100wt% based on the unsaturated alcohol, in a polar aprotic solvent, e.g. N,N-dimethylformamide, in an oxygen atmosphere preferably at 40-150 deg.C, to give a compound expressed by formula II. |
