PURPOSE:To prepare acetic anhydride, economically, by reacting methyl acetate, etc. with carbon monoxide in the presence of nickel, a halide, and an organic nitrogen-group compound, using IA, IIA and/or IVA group metals of the periodic table as a cocatalyst. CONSTITUTION:Acetic anhydride is prepared at high rate of reaction, keeping the activity of an inexpensive catalyst at high level, by reacting methyl acetate or dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst composed of (A) nickel or a nickel compound, (B) a bromide and/or an iodide, esp. a methyl halide, and (C) an organic nitrogen-group compound, esp. a phosphine compound containing trivalent phosphorus or a heterocyclic compound such as pyridine, in combination with a cocatalyst composed of (D) a metal selected from metals of IA, IIA and IVA groups of the periodic table or its compound, esp. Li, Al or Sn, and if necessary, (E) the IIA group metal or its compound, esp. Ba. |
