The continuous furnace is provided with several remote mixers for a variable amt. of fuel and air, and each mixer is employed to does the fuel/air mixt. into one ring manifold. Several ring manifolds are located one above the other on the lower part of the shaft furnace. Each ring manifold feeds the gaseous mixt. of fuel and air into a small number of burners, esp. four burners per manifold, and each burner is of the flame retention type, using a ceramic refractory tunnel to form a cylindrical combustion chamber (36).
