For the introduction of scavenging and charging air or of air-fuel mixture, ports (7) are provided in the cylinder cover (3) of a two-stroke internal combustion engine, being uniformly distributed over its circumference in two concentric circles (9, 10). These ports are closed on the cylinder chamber-side base of the cylinder cover (3) by valves (5) which open and close due to the pressures generated on the valve bodies. Due to the uniform distribution and an inflow of air or mixture as far as possible in the longitudinal direction of the cylinder chamber, a <<displacement piston>> advancing in this direction is formed, by means of which the combustion gases are expelled by way of piston-controlled exhaust ports, thereby achieving optimum scavenging. <IMAGE>
