PURPOSE:To improve the machining accuracy of the end surface by adjusting the projecting length of the cladding of an optical fiber, its angle to a polishing tool, and its amount of cut with respect to the polishing tool so as to determine the polishing force. CONSTITUTION:Cladding 1-2 including a core at the end part of an optical fiber 1 is projected a certain length and fitted to a holder 5. This holder is fixed with an angle of inclination phi to a polishing tool 10, a certain amount of cut is provided by a cutting table 8, and the end of the optical fiber 1 is polished to a required degree of angle. To measure the extent to which the optical fiber 1 is cut, the optical fiber is illuminated sideways through lighting apparatus 14, and the reflected light from the surface of the cladding 1-2 is observed through a magnifier 15. |
