PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber preform having increased OH-content and relatively low transmission loss, by heat-treating a porous glass containing Ta, Ti or Zr in an atmosphere containing the vapor of H2O or D2O. CONSTITUTION:A porous glass containing one or more elements selected from Ta, Ti and Zr is sintered by heating in an atmosphere of He, etc. containing H2O vapor and/or D2O vapor. A glass for an optical fiber preform containing Ta, Ti and/or Zr in the core and having an OH-content of >=2,000ppm can be prepared by this process. |
