A liquid-absorbent item 11 for disposable use comprises an essentially rectangular absorbent pad 11, the inner side of which is covered with a sheet 8 of a liquid- permeable material, for example a sheet of non-woven material, and the outer side of which is covered with a sheet 7 of a liquid-impermeable material, for example polyethylene, the said two sheets being entirely or partially joined along their edges. The pad 11 is formed with at least three superimposed layers 14a, 14b, 14c, comprising one or more sheets of cellulose foam, in which the outer layer 14a is continuous, whilst the other two layers 14b, 14c comprise two superimposed half layers, arranged symmetrically about the longitudinal axis of the pad. This liquid-absorbent item is suitable, among other things, as a disposable nappy for babies and adults, sanitary towel and dressing. <IMAGE>
