NEW MATERIAL:An isonicotinic acid anilide expressed by formula I [R is alkyl or phenyl (both may be substituted by halogen); X and Y are H, halogen alkyl or CF3; m is an integer 0-2]. EXAMPLE:Isonicotinic acid [4-chloro-2-(alpha-acetoxybenzyl)]anilide. USE:A plant growth regulator capable of acting on gramineous crops and lawns. PREPARATION:A benzhydrol derivative expressed by formula II is acylated with the corresponding carboxylic acid or a reactive derivative thereof, e.g. an ester, acid chloride or acid anhydride, to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I .
