PURPOSE:To detect an air-fuel ratio in a rich/lean region by using a potential difference measuring device which measures the sum of electromotive forces of two kinds of oxygen sensors in combination and detecting the air-fuel ratio with a potential difference measured by the measuring device. CONSTITUTION:The 1st oxygen sensor 38 consisting of an oxygen ion conductive solid-state electrolyte 35 and a couple of catalyst activating electrodes 33 and 36 and the 2nd oxygen sensor 39 consisting of an oxygen ion conductive solid-state electrolyte 35, catalyst activating electrode 34, and catalyst inactivating electrode 37 are connected to a constant current power source 41 in series. Further, the potential difference measuring device 42 which measures the sum of electromotive forces of both oxygen sensors 38 and 39 is provided in combination to detect the air-fuel ratio with the potential difference measured by the potential difference measuring device 42. |
