The present invention relates to a method and a device for measuring the dimensions of a rectangular plane surface. The surface 2 to be measured is passed at a defined speed under a detector 7, this detector being movable transversely T to the direction F of passage at a defined speed, this detector is placed in a starting position at a known distance from one of the lateral edges of the sheet, the movement of the detector towards the opposite edge of the surface is triggered by the detection by the detector of the front edge of the surface, the first interruption to the detection of the surface by the detector is recorded in order to calculate the width of the surface and this first interruption is used to reverse the direction of movement of the detector 7 and the second interruption to the detection of the surface by the detector is recorded in order to deduce therefrom the length of the surface. <IMAGE>
